According to gmaps pedometer we live about 188 yards from Orzo, yet in four years we have never been there. But a few nights ago my lovely wife decided to surprise me with a date night!
Overall, we really liked the atmosphere and the food. Orzo was fairly busy (it was a saturday night), but they were able to seat us without a reservation. They have a lot of great sounding appetizers and salads, but the ones we chose were not outstanding. The escargot with polenta and egg may have been better with a smaller egg, and the greek salad was well over-dressed (just a little olive oil would have been perfect). Its rare we like main courses more than first courses, but this was definitely the case at Orzo. The bolognese I had was perfect. It was a little both-y and the pasta was light and perfectly cooked. Betsy had a special – some sort of twirly pasta with scallops and mussels. She said it was excellent.
One thing we learned while at Orzo: apparently if you go there for restaurant week you can purchase a voucher for a three course meal for $23 to use another time. Pretty good deal. Yet another thing we learned: Calvino Cafe is associated with Orzo AND they serve lunch and dinner there. For some reason I thought its was just an espresso bar.
All in all we will probably be headed back here. Seems like an especially great place to take visitors.
