Shebeen Pub and Braai

by thesoontobemurrys

We went to Shebeen for the first time the other night with some friends (check them out here and here). We had been meaning to go here for a long time with Betsy’s family (because they lived in Z.A.), but always forget. I’ve never been to South Africa, so I can’t testify to how authentic the food is at Shebeen, but it did taste very good. Bets got the lamb curry potjie. It was extremely flavorful – more fruity and a little more complex than an Indian curry. The best part was the little dish of corn pudding. Betsy’s mom makes this and it’s one of her favorites. I got the Peri Peri Chicken. It was well cooked and the sauce was much more spicy than I expected, but that was a good thing.

The atmosphere was cool and we want to try other dishes. Apparently people come here to watch futbol and rugby. We will definitely try to take the family next time they visit, and we’ll probably go back ourselves, especially considering it’s just a short walk.
