date night: ten
Betsy and I went out for a date the other night. We had a downtown mall gift certificate so we decided to go back to a restaurant that we enjoyed once before, Ten.
This place is really fabulous. We started with the seaweed salad (a favorite from our last visit), then moved on to three things we have not tried before. The first was a rice bowl called Poke Donn (sp?). It is chunks of raw tuna, seaweed, avocado, and maybe a few other things over sushi rice that was lightly coated in a sweet sauce and sesame seeds. Then we had two specialty rolls. One was very simple – tuna with a very spicy honey sauce. It was an interesting type of heat that didn’t hit you until about 10 seconds after you started chewing. I highly recommend this — probably my favorite specialty roll from anywhere. The other roll we had was called “sake roll.” It is salmon, tempura flakes, and probably something else with a slightly spicy white sauce. Not quite as good as the honey roll, but still very tasty.
This place turns my only mild taste for sushi into an obsession.
Overall this is one of our favorite places in Charlottesville. Also, the place seemed very busy, which is always nice to see from a place that deserves it. Do not miss out.
